This document involved gathering and studying information and visiting some 70 colleges and universities to talk with students, faculty, and administrators concerning career development of the effective college teachers. In addition, an informal national survey of systematic efforts being made to improve teachers' career development was conducted. The results were almost totally negative. In light of this, this document considers the problems and possibilities of career development as they appear in relation to individual needs and aspirations at various stages in a career and to the characteristics and aims of ccolleges and universities. Chapter seven deals with special problems of the community colleges, the predominantly black colleges, and the careers of academic women. Other chapters concern preparing college teachers, the beginning teachers, the reward system, and leadership. A selective bibliography is included
